Tax services

Tax servicesLike all our other services, we operate on a fully fixed fee basis. We provide a friendly, efficient and cost effective service in all of the following areas:

  • Personal tax returns and advice
  • Company tax returns and advice
  • VAT returns and advice
  • PAYE/NI compliance
  • Assistance with tax investigations

In addition we offer a full tax planning service covering the following areas:

  • Income tax and national insurance
  • Corporation tax
  • Inheritance tax
  • Capital gains tax
  • Trust tax

Our tax planning service is aimed at those clients who have more complex financial affairs and want to minimise their exposure to tax both now and in the future. We help to structure your financial affairs in the most tax efficient manner.

Company accounts

AccountsAll limited and public limited companies must send their company accounts to Companies House. If they wish to – and are eligible – small companies may prepare and file 'abbreviated company accounts'.

We are happy to prepare annual statutory accounts for shareholders as well as abbreviated accounts for filing at Companies House. Like all our other services, we operate on a fully fixed-fee basis.

Contractors

At Hallam Jones we act for a large number of contractors – typically people who act as consultants for a few clients and who have a limited company structure rather than being sole traders.

Since such clients have a low volume of paperwork we can generally offer a value for money solution on a fixed fee basis of just £55 per month that covers a variety of needs, to include:

  • Company Formation
  • PAYE Returns
  • Self-Assessment Returns
  • Statutory Company Accounts
  • VAT Returns
  • Management Accounts
  • HMRC and Companies House Requirements

We will discuss the best way to minimise your tax liabilities and maximise your take-home pay. Contact us for a discussion of your needs.

Book keeping

Book keepingClients who do not have the internal resources to carry on this function themselves, or who prefer to outsource such services, can be fully confident that your records are being taken care of and that all relevant regulations and legislation are being complied with.

Our book-keeping service is cost effective and efficient and allows clients to choose from a monthly, quarterly or annual service.

All our services are based on fixed fees so you can be sure that your budget is completely manageable and there will be no unpleasant surprises.

Payroll

We offer a full payroll service for your business. We can run monthly or weekly payroll to ensure that you are fully up-to-date with payroll deductions.

The service includes monthly or weekly payroll, payslips, advising you of your HMRC obligations, performing year end processes such as employer year end returns (P35's and P11d's) and employee P14's and P60's.

We charge a fixed monthly fee and don't charge for the occasional re-run if you want to amend an employee’s pay or if someone joins or leaves your business.

HMRC enquiries

HMRC enquiries commonly take one of two forms:

  • Limited scope HMRC enquiries
Every year HMRC will open limited enquiries – basically they ask you to prove one or two figures on your tax returns and if they are satisfied they close their enquiry. If they are not satisfied then they often open a full scope enquiry into your affairs.

  • Full scope HMRC enquiries
Full scope HMRC enquiries mean you must produce all documentation to support your accounts and tax returns. This includes sales invoices, purchase invoices, expense receipts, bank statements, credit card statements, bank paying in books and cheque books. These documents can cover either a full accounting year or more than one year.

A small number of taxpayers are selected randomly for this type of enquiry and in addition, HMRC will open this type of enquiry where they have reason to believe it is appropriate (where for example information has been made available to them concerning specific taxpayers).

Where HMRC finds that the taxpayer has not properly disclosed information it can seek to impose penalties of up to 100 per cent of the tax due plus interest on the late payment of taxes arising from the enquiry.

  • COP9 Investigations
A COP9 Investigation is carried out by HMRC where they believe a significant fraud has taken place, usually involving more than £100,000 of tax. These investigations can be lengthy and stressful. In addition they can result in substantial penalties being payable.

We can deal with all aspects of HMRC enquiries including liaising with HMRC on your behalf, making voluntary disclosures, negotiating the closure of an enquiry and settlement of any taxes, penalties and interest due. We usually conduct this work on a fixed-fee basis.
